This Field Note documents a concrete roof slab waterproofing project at Rini Home 2, Gelang Patah, Johor Bahru.
The existing roof surface required proper preparation before the waterproofing coating system could be applied. The work focused on preparing the concrete surface, treating the critical perimeter and upturn areas, and applying the waterproofing system across the exposed roof slab.
These photographs were recovered from our earlier project records and show the actual work progress from surface preparation through to the completed waterproofing finish.
Surface Preparation Before Waterproofing
Surface preparation is one of the most important stages of a concrete roof waterproofing system. The existing slab surface was cleaned and prepared so that loose material, dirt and contaminants would not interfere with the adhesion of the waterproofing coating.
Particular attention was also given to the roof perimeter, wall junctions and upturn areas, as these transition points can become potential water-entry paths if they are not properly detailed.
Waterproofing Coating Application
Once the concrete surface had been properly prepared, the waterproofing coating system was applied across the exposed roof slab. The application also extended to the perimeter and upturn areas to create continuous waterproofing protection around the roof surface.

Waterproofing should not stop at the horizontal roof surface. The perimeter edges, wall junctions and upturn areas also need continuous treatment because these are common transition points where water can enter when detailing deteriorates.
On this project, the waterproofing treatment was continued from the main concrete slab into the surrounding upturn areas to provide a more complete protective system.

A waterproofing coating system depends on more than simply applying material over a roof surface. Surface preparation, continuity of the waterproofing layer, and proper treatment around perimeter and upturn areas all contribute to the overall performance of the system.
